How To Keep Cool In Hot Weather: Wear These 4 Fabrics

Oct 24, 2023

If you overheat easily, opt for natural fibres

If you find yourself getting overheated during hot weather, choosing the right fabric to wear could make all the difference when it comes to feeling cool and comfortable this summer.

Shadmaan Kader, the manager of Poundametre, has shared their advice on the best textiles to wear when the weather is warm: "When it comes to summer fashion, comfort and style are key, and lightweight fabrics can provide both.

"Whether you're planning a day out in the sun or attending a summer soirée, be sure to incorporate some of these light and airy fabrics into your wardrobe for a stylish and comfortable summer season.

"In addition to being lightweight, these materials are also easy to clean and may be dressed up or down depending on the situation."

A classic fabric, loose cotton layers are a great option when the weather heats up – both at home and on holiday.

Shadmaan says cotton is: "A timeless summer fabric that is lightweight, breathable, and comfortable to wear. It's easy to care for and is machine washable, meaning it's the perfect summer fabric.

"Cotton comes in a variety of weights, from lightweight voile to heavier twill, so depending on the occasion, choose accordingly."

"Linen is another popular summer fabric that is breathable," advises Shadmaan. "It has a slightly rougher texture meaning it gives a casual, relaxed feel, and is super absorbent, which makes it a good choice for hot, humid weather."

Linen trousers and shirts are ultra-comfy and will also help to protect your skin, making them especially great for days when the sun's rays are beating down.

Linen is a good option for bedding, too. Here's our round up of sets to consider.

Chambray is a lightweight cotton fabric with a denim-like appearance, commonly seen in stretchy jeans such as jeggings.

Shadmaan notes: "It's breathable and easy to wear, and it can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, whether it's an afternoon picnic or lunchtime in the park; chambray is versatile and lightweight."

Unlike silky-feeling polyester - which can leave you feeling sticky in the heat - pure silk is both breathable and also naturally moisture-wicking. It's also a more formal and dressed-up option.

"Silk is a luxurious fabric that looks effortlessly chic, making it a great option for summer," says Shaadman.

"However, it's important to note that silk can be incredibly delicate and may require special care, such as hand washing or dry cleaning, so read the care labels carefully before washing."
